Position summary: The youth minister’s primary responsibility is to oversee a holistic program of spiritual development for our church’s young people starting in 7th through 12th grade. This program should help young people grow in their commitment to the vintage path of Jesus and His people.

Key verses: “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:14-15).

“If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34).

Key thought: “Therefore we must prepare our hearts and our bodies to do battle under the holy obedience of His commands; and let us ask God that He be pleased to give us the help of His grace for anything which our nature finds hardly possibly” (from Saint Benedict, “Prologue” to The Rule).

Qualifications:

  1. Church background – A person committed to the fellowship of Churches of Christ
  2. Education – A degree preferably in youth ministry. Minimum of:

    a. Associate’s degree with 4 years full-time Youth Ministry experience OR

    b. Bachelor’s degree with 2 years full-time Youth Ministry experience
  3. Family – Strong preference given for a married candidate with a supportive spouse
  4. Skills and experience – A person with the demonstrated ability to:

    a. teach, mentor and interact well with teens

    b. work well with ministry staff, elders and other ministry leaders

    c. gives and receives instruction

    d. work with a diverse congregation

    e. be a self-starter

    f. manages time and stays organized

    g. deal with sensitive issues openly and honestly; understand and respect confidentiality

    h. develop an educational program with theoretical and practical applications for youth

    i. encourages & assists with leading teens in worship
  5. Personal – Willingness to submit to a background investigation
